Purpose: Demonstrate the "electric wind" phenomenon.
Description: A lighted candle is positioned between a discharge point and a flat plate, which are in turn connected to a Van de Graaff generator as shown in the photograph. When the Van de Graaff is turned on, the "electric wind" blows the candle flame, as can be seen in the picture at the right.
