F5-10: CHIMNEY DRAW WITH WATER

Purpose: Illustrate the concept of chimney draw.
Description: A plastic tube is inserted into a water reservoir, and a jet of air blown across the top of the tube. Water rises in the tube. Note that the beaker in the picture is NOT sealed, so atmospheric pressure acts on the surface of the water in the beaker. Note that this demonstration does NOT show the Bernoulli effect. The explanation of this effect is entrainment of the air in the vicinity of the airstream by the rapidly moving air in the stream; that is, dragging along air in the vicinity, including that in the top end of the tube.
