  • A1-02: MASSES - CHROME PLATED

    a1-02
Show a collection of calibrated masses
This is a collection of large masses, suitable for students to handle to get a feel for SI units of mass. Normally 1kg, 2kg, and 5kg masses are delivered; 20kg and 25kg available upon request. These are suitable for hands-on experience, but we recommend that the masses rest on a table for students to come up to and examine, rather than attempting to pass them around.

  • A1-12: METRIC TAPE

    a1-12
Make measurements in the metric system
Flexible 10-meter metric scale. The opposite side is scaled in feet and inches.

Can be used for a variety of measurement purposes.

    A1
  • A1-21: METRONOME

    A1-21
Means to show different intervals of time
A typical mechanical metronome, beats between 40 and 208 clicks per minute. Useful for introducing the concept of time measurement.

Invite students to speculate about the mechanism of changing the time base - why does moving a weight change the rate? This can be related to concepts of levers, moment of inertia, and mechanical harmonic oscillators.

  • A1-51: SKATEBOARD

    A1-51
    Show things with a skateboard
Wooden platform with ball bearing wheels. Can be used in a variety of entertaining ways. Please be careful.

  • A2-12: SLATED SPHERE

    A2-12
    Demonstrate rotation and spherical geometry

This device can be used to demonstrate rotation and spherical geometry, as well as for astronomical illustrations.

Rotating metal sphere has green chalkboard surface. Axis is tilted as is that of the earth.

  • A2-21: MAGNETIC VECTOR BOARD

    A2-21
    Demonstrate properties of vectors

Various lengths of magnetic vectors can be affixed in arbitrary positions to a magnetic board. The lengths of the three longer vectors are in the ratio 3:4:5, so that they can form a right triangle. Illustrate vector addition, subtraction, motion of vectors, and commutative properties.

Note:This board is for use in smaller classrooms; chalkboards provide magnetic base in lecture halls (Demonstration A2-22).

  • A2-22: MAGNETIC VECTORS - LECTURE HALL BLACKBOARDS

    A2-22
    Demonstration of vector properties
Various length of magnetic vectors that can be affixed to Lecture Hall boards. The lengths are in the ratio 3:4:5, so that they can form a right triangle. Illustrate vector addition, subtraction, motion of vectors, and commutative properties. Only usable in large lecture halls with steel-backed chalkboards.

  • D5-02: FOOTBALL

    D5-02
    Example of a gyroscopic effect.
Spin the football with its long axis in a horizontal plane. It will then rise until it is rotating about about the long axis with one end in contact with the floor. This experiment can also be done with eggs: a hard boiled egg will rise to rotate on its end, while a raw egg will quickly cease rotating.

  • E2-01: WORLD GLOBE

    E2-01
    Illustrate the globe
This is just a standard globe of the planet earth with latitude and longitude lines marked.
    E2
  • E2-37: PLATONIC SOLIDS AND KEPLER

    E2-37
Visualize the Platonic solids and Kepler's dream for using them to explain planetary orbits.

There are five three-dimensional Platonic solids. The faces of a Platonic solid are identical regular polygons and all vertex angles are equal. These solids are:

    Name..........Number of faces

    Tetrahedron.......4
    Cube...................6
    Octahedron.........8
    Dodecahedron....12
    Icosahedron........20

As illustrated in the accompanying transparency, Kepler spent most of his life assuming that planetary orbits were circular and trying to use Platonic solids to deduce their radii. Only much later, after he gave up his dream, did he discover his true laws for planetary motion. Although Kepler's original dream was a failure, much of the same mathematical/geometrical spirit prevails in our modern attempts to explain the fundamental nature of matter via symmetry, group theory, field theory, the geometry of various higher dimensional manifolds, and string theory.

  • H1-31: SOUND LEVEL METER

    H1-31
Demonstrate use of a sound level meter.
Several loud sources can provided upon request, including musical instruments, noisy laboratory apparatus, and a portable audiotape machine with earphones. You can also invite students to bring up their own devices to test. It is surprisingly easy to get over 100dB in earphones. The sound level meter can viewed by a TV camera and displayed on the main screen.
  • H4-81: AUDIO CART - COMPLETE AUDIO SYSTEM

    H4-81
Show the various components of a reasonably modern audio system.
This audio cart is a permanent Lecture-Demonstration setup consisting of : (1) a 60 Watt per channel integrated audio amplifier, an audiocassette deck, a compact disc player, and a pair of Large Advent loudspeakers. Use it to show what these components look like, or obtain some of our vast library of recordings to play, and illustrate what it sounds like. Play a recording of Tuvan throat singers and really baffle them. A number of standard demonstrations make use of this audio cart systen.

  • H5-03: STETHOSCOPE

    H5-03
Hear with a stethoscope, and to experience the time resolution between the two ears.
Listen to a heartbeat or breathing with the stethoscope. Gently tap the surface of the tube as you move your hand back and forth along the tube; the time between when the tap arrives at the two ears creates the effect of the sound appearing to move laterally.

  • K5-21: AC PLUG CIRCUIT CHECKER

    K5-21
Check the wiring of 110VAC power sockets.
When plugged into a 110V AC outlet, this popular device can be used to detect some common wiring errors. A simple pattern of indicator lights communicates faults with polarity, grounding, and open connections. When using, be certain that it is fully inserted into the socket for consistent results.

Consider ordering this in conjunction with K5-22, which provides some sample faulty outlets.
