  • H6-13: COMPACT DISC - HUUN-HUUR-TU

    H6-13
Illustrate manipulation of vocal formants and harmonics in the voice.
Male voices sing various notes while manipulating their vocal tract to obtain emphasis on different harmonics of the fundamental note being sung. This very unusual music consists of a type of throat singing developed in Tuva, the former Soviet territory, now an independent country in central Asia. Three CDs are available, including one recorded jointly with the Kronos String Quartet. Selections on another disc include the old favorite, "60 Horses in my Herd."

  • H6-14: AUDIOTAPE 5 MIN - SYNTHETIC SPEECH

    H6-14
    Illustrate development of speech patterns.
The examples of synthesized speech on the tape illustrate the development of speech from simple sounds, putting them together, and adding an accent. This is a very early and rudimentary example, but is instructive.

  • H6-16: COMPACT DISC - COALESCENCE

    H6-16
Illustrate manipulation of vocal formants and harmonics in the voice.
A chorus sings in such a manner to accentuate subharmonics and harmonic overtones in their voices. The recording was made in an abandoned watertower, which serves as a large resonant cavity with a long decay time. Two tracks also include the music of a tamboura. The CD can be played in the audio cart, or using a PC, which offers a spectrogram visualization of the tracks.

To view the spectrogram of these sources, play them on the PC using Windows Media Player 9. To run Media Player 9 in full mode, press CTRL+1. To turn on the spectrogram visualization from the menu bar, select View --> Visualizations --> Bars & Waves --> Bars.

  • H6-21: BIRD CALLS - AUDIOTAPE, SLIDES, AND SPECTROGRAMS

    H6-21
Correlate the sounds of bird songs with their audio spectrograms.
An audiotape containing four bird songs can be played while displaying overhead projector transparencies showing drawings of the birds and audio spectrographs of their songs. Birds included are: Mourning Dove, Blue Jay, House Wren, and Cardinal. This tape is instructive in learning what audio spectrographs are and how to interpret them. Using a reference book which has the spectrographs it is actually possible to identfy birds from their calls.
