We are saddened to report that John Layman, a retired UMD faculty member and past president of AAPT who contributed a great deal to the Lecture-Demonstration facility and to science education overall, passed away recently. From his neon-lamp static electricity detector to his tireless advocacy for education and inquiry, he loomed large in our field and in campus life. He was widely respected and will be greatly missed.
